The GreenHome Institute’s – Embodied Carbon and the Passive House Standard” – Free CE Webinar

March 16, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm EDT

Details about this event

The international Passive House Standard has been the pacesetter for reducing building operational energy use. Now, there is a tool to calculate embodied carbon as part of the Passive House process – integrated into the Passive House Planning Package energy model – extending the designer’s capacity to address total building emissions and climate impact.

This session will provide an introduction to the international Passive House Standard, its methodology, and its application across the US. We will also provide an overview of the new embodied carbon calculating tool that integrates with Passive House design, called the PHribbon.

This course is for architects, designers, builders, developers, and regulators interested in addressing total building carbon emissions. Basic building science knowledge is recommended for participants.

Continuing Education Units (CEUS) 1 hour in

  • Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI)
  • Passive Housing International
  • Building Performance Institute (BPI) NonWholeHouse
  • American Institute of Architects – AIA (HSW) (PENDING)
  • Certified Green Professional (NARI & CGP)
  • Certified GreenHome Professional (CGHP)
  • AIBD
  • State Architect / Builder License may be applicable

Lessons Learned:

  1. Outline the basic performance criteria of the Passive House Standard.
  2. Describe the methodology and specific applications of the Passive House Standard.
  3. Outline the purpose and functionality of the Passive House embodied carbon calculating too.
  4. Describe how the combination of operational and embodied carbon calculations may affect project design and specification.

Instructor: Ken Levenson

Raised in Vermont, Ken practiced architecture for 20 years in New York City. Starting in 2010, focused on the climate emergency, Ken became a founding board member of New York Passive House, the National Passive House Alliance, and the North American Passive House Network. In 2011 Ken co-founded 475 High Performance Building Supply, with a mission to transform the North American construction industry. Ken has served on advisory panels for Urban Green’s 90 by 50 advanced policy report and the Framework Guidelines for Energy Efficiency Standards in Buildings of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. In 2019 Ken stepped down from the board of PHN and the management of 475 and volunteered for Extinction Rebellion.

In August 2020 Ken became the first Executive Director of NAPHN. When not thinking about Passive House or hanging out with his wife and daughters, Ken can often be found walking their Newfoundland dog in Prospect Park. Ken has a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Pratt Institute.
