IN 2020, PRESENTED COMPLETELY VIRTUAL!

The Design & Build Design Series’ Summer Conference is two-days of educational sessions and an architectural tour focused on equipping residential and light commercial designers and design/build builders with tips and tools they can use to excel. The educational curriculum is a reflection of an industry practice analysis performed by the American Institute of Building Design (AIBD) in 2015, which is also the basis for the current Certified Professional Building Designer exam blueprint. Each 90-minute session is presented by an industry practitioner volunteering their time and knowledge to aid in building a better residential design profession. To assist you with your product specifying, at least two leading-edge building products are featured during a lunch-and-learn or breakfast-and-learn program. The architectural tours are a convenient break from the classroom where you can not only learn about traditional architecture but modern design as well. Not to mention, a great opportunity to learn about a part of the city you’ve never visited before.

Professionals and product manufacturers from around the country attend the Design & Build Conference Series events. It’s been said through the years, “The real education comes from interacting with others in my profession during the networking events.” Often competitors from other regions of the country can become valuable resources for referrals and best-practices. Avoiding peers for fear of others discovering your competitive advantage can actually limit your own success. Collaboration is the way to approach networking. While there are those whose intentions can be suspect, most people can help each other uncover ideas and spark inspiration when they get to know each other on a personal level.

The Summer Conference is particularly special because of a few elements that the other quarterly events don’t have – The American Residential Design Awards (ARDA) Gala, the AIBD Annual Membership Meeting, and pre-conference corporate board meetings. Beginning the day before the event, the AIBD Board of Directors, the National Council of Building Designer Certification (NCBDC) Board of Examiners, and the AIBD College of Fellows gather individually and jointly throughout the day. The individual meetings are open to the public and no registration is required. The same applies to the AIBD Annual Membership Meeting. The awards gala is the climax of the AIBD’s annual design awards program. Rub elbows with the best of the best at this (black tie optional) event. More than 80 awards are presented to dozens of design firms from all parts of America, sometimes the world.

Being in business should be rewarding and fun. All work and no play can get old fast. Attend a Design & Build Conference and add a layer of enjoyment to managing your career growth by mixing a social aspect into your learning and industry branding efforts. Maximize your travel investment and schedule an extra day at the beginning or end of the trip to explore or visit friends in the region. Never underestimate the power of a little fun mixed with some interesting people!
