I am running for a position as Director of the American Institute of Building Design. My vision of the future of the AIBD begins with the strength of its members. It is the members of the Institute that I have dedicated past involvement. It has been my way of respectfully returning the favors I have benefited from by other members of our organization.
The members of the AIBD are diverse in their practice, expertise, and successes. Each member has so much to offer in their own way for the future of our selected profession. It does not matter if the member holds a professional, certified, associate or even a corporate membership. Each of our members has a value. That value has to be protected and promoted to the highest levels possible.
To the best of my abilities, I promise to make decisions for the benefit of all members equally.

The single most important issue the candidate wants to tackle or goal she/he wishes to achieve:

Barron Custom Design, LLC
Austin, TX
felicia@barroncustomdesign.com
Felicia is a third generation Austinite and a fifth-generation Texan. It was only fitting that she would attend The University of Texas following the family legacy started by her football star grandfather.
Designing in central Texas is not only a career it’s a calling. After many years working with an Architect, Felicia left to work for a builder to get experience on both sides of the fence. In 2003 she started her business on a referral only basis. What she found was as long as you treated people right and stood behind your word then your business would continue to grow.
Today Felicia has a successful business and a steady stream of referrals. Her company is continuing to grow in areas that compliment design- from development to building. Felicia’s company is also growing across state lines and into many other parts of the country.
She believes that it doesn’t really matter where you do business as long as you do it the right way- take care of your clients, treat them with respect, tell them the truth (even if you don’t get the job) and you will earn the trust and respect of your clients. As long as you follow these principals the work will come but more importantly, the career will blossom.

I want to continue to educate designers and contractors on the benefits of BIM. As well I want to work towards a deliverable standard where we turn over a full digital twin of our clients home so that all design elements, equipment, and the data-rich information is provided at the completion of construction. The life cycle of our client’s homes begins with the information contained inside the digital twin. Through my experience as a presenter and instructor, as well as working with multiple AIBD members, I have witnessed a significant technology gap that the organization has been pushing to overcome. I was involved in the organization and implementation of the AIBD BIM-R Certification program, and I see that as an excellent step in the direction of both educating AIBD members in new design technology, as well as helping AIBD pioneer a new residentially minded approach to the technology. I also would like to give voice and input to how AIBD can begin to reach out more effectively to the next generation of designers. As a younger business owner, I have the experience of navigating the current design community and attempting to interject new ideas, project delivery techniques, and services to clients. I also have employed a younger workforce and have learned to adapt our office to a different type of culture to create a thriving work environment that invites newer designers to contribute and encourages their individual growth.
I would like help AIBD to reach out more effectively to a younger design generation to help them feel included and valued within the organization. Thank you for your consideration, and I look forward to contributing to AIBD in any capacity in the future.

I have worked in the building design profession for the last 26 years. I started out my career in Tampa, FL as a truss designer and sales representative for a lumber company. Moving on to purchasing and construction management for a regional home builder and then taking on the enormous task of developing the Architectural department for a national home builder and becoming their Architectural Manager. I held the position of Project Manager for an Architectural firm who specialized in very large complex commercial projects in California, Arizona, and Colorado. I worked for the State of Vermont overseeing Government historic preservation and restoration projects as well as working with the state legislature to fund those projects. I’ve operated my design firm for 8 years beginning in Tampa, FL and then relocating to Salida, CO. My firm has completed many custom mountain homes, multi-family dwellings, tenant improvements, collaborated with local architects on commercial and development designs as well as construction administration and management.
Involvement in my community is of crucial importance to me. I sit on the Board of Directors for The Heart of the Rockies Chamber of Commerce. I’m an active member of The Salida Sunrise Rotary Club. I am also passionate about supporting young people interested in design and construction. From time to time I offer mentoring to high school students and I volunteer on career day to speak to students about what it is Building Designers are and what we do.
