Volunteer for a Committee

“Every man owes a part of his time and money to the industry in which he is engaged. No one has a moral right to withhold support from an organization that is striving to improve conditions within their sphere.”

President Theodore Roosevelt

This organization began when designers, like you, saw a need to band together to fight for shared values and interests.

AIBD’s vision is to represent how homes are designed in America.

Our mission is to build a better residential design profession, one designer at a time.

And our seven core beliefs include respecting people, delivering quality, educating each other, empowering everyone, contributing to the community, seeking participation, and having fun.

Do you believe the same and have some ideas of your own?

“If you have the vision, you have the job!”

Steve Mickley, AIBD Executive Director

Our existence depends on volunteers’ help, guidance, advice, and support.

Committees are teams of members and non-members, hopefully, representatives from each generation, from different parts of the country, and with different areas of expertise and levels of experience.

The only thing they need to have in common is the desire to serve the association for one year.

Go to AIBD.org/hub and choose “Committees and Councils” to check out our list of committees, their responsibilities, and what projects they’re working on.

Committee Composition

The number of members in a committee is limited, but not limited to membership. However, not being a member may restrict you to being an advisor only.

Many of our committee positions, particularly those related to the certification, require the expertise of someone who knows the trade and can help make decisions about industry practices, policies, standards, and which direction AIBD should take.

Certain committees (which may not be shown on the list below) are formed using “ex-officio” positions, which means volunteers who hold a position are automatically members of those committees. For example, the chairperson of an AIBD chapter is a member of the Chapter Chairs Committee, by virtue of their position.

Committee Meetings

Committee meetings are always virtual. They are usually scheduled once a month and run from thirty minutes to one hour.

GoToMeeting is the virtual platform used for committee meetings. A webcam and mic are helpful, but not required. Committee members may log into the meeting using a telephone.

Tutoring is available. No special software purchases or subscriptions are required.

Project Management Platform

AIBD uses BaseCamp as its committee management, scheduling, and communication tool.

Tutoring is available. No special software purchases or subscriptions are required.

Training and Personal Development

While making a real difference in your industry, volunteering also is an opportunity to improve your skills as a leader.

Lifetime friendships, even partnerships, have come about through AIBD members working together to solve a problem or launch a program.

Our committee members have exclusive complimentary access to thousands of dollars worth of on-demand business, career, and leadership training not offered to anyone else in the organization.
