The Classical Dilemmas: The Round and Square Column Dilemma

Welcome to the last installment of a four-part series on the little problems in classical architecture overcome through the ages.

In the first week, we addressed the issues with the corner columns in the Doric Order and how to compensate for their spacing and alignment with the triglyphs in the frieze above.

In the second week, we discovered the problems at the corners with the ionic column capitals and a few options for resolving that.

Last week, we looked at the dilemmas caused by the columns at the corners of an interior arcaded loggia.

Now, on to the issue you must resolve when using round and square columns along the same beam.

If you’re like me, you’re thinking, “I didn’t know that was an issue until now.”

Miscellaneous

Congrats! To those receiving our new coffee mug.

We are thrilled to announce a brand new tradition for our organization – a monthly raffle exclusively for members who renew their membership before the expiration date!

As a token of our appreciation for your continued support, we’re giving you the chance to win a one-of-a-kind, limited-edition coffee mug designed by our talented team.

The winners chosen from the April 30th renewals are:

  • Curtis Showvaker (SC)
  • Steven Madden (MS)
  • Domonic Luppino (OH)
Here’s how it works:
Each month, we will compile a list of members who have renewed their membership before the last day of the prior month. During our popular show, “Coffee With Bernie,” three lucky members will be randomly chosen from the list, and each will receive the coveted new coffee mug as a prize.

Not only will you be sipping your morning brew in style, but you’ll also have a unique keepsake that represents our organization’s community spirit and your commitment to our cause.
If you haven’t renewed your membership yet, now is the perfect time to do so and get in on this exciting opportunity! Don’t miss out on the chance to win one of these exclusive coffee mugs and be part of our growing monthly tradition.

Remember, catch the Coffee With Bernie replays at AIBD.org/Coffee-With-Bernie and the live show every second Friday.
