ARDA Opens March 1 – Save the Date!
The American Residential Design Awards (ARDA) spotlights the most creative and innovative residential designers, builders, remodelers, architects, developers, land planners, and interior designers in the nation.

ARDA is an awards program, not a design competition. Entries are not grouped in square footage or project value classifications, and judging is conducted by a panel of residential design and construction experts based on the quality of the entry.

All residential industry professionals are eligible to enter individual or collaborative projects.

Sign up for the next Coffee With Bernie
A monthly “fishbowl” open space discussion hosted by AIBD President Bernie Kern on the second Friday.
This month’s quest and opening topic
Writing blogs to market your business.
(In case you didn’t know, a blog is short for weblog)

Join us this month with an all-star cast of guests. AIBD’s External Vice President and Editor of the AIBD Magazine Yu-Ngok Lo, AIBD College of Fellows and author of the new You-Inspired Living blogs Jennifer Pippin, AIBD Communications Director and our personal Social Media Guru Garrett Mickley, and AIBD Member and Staff Professional Technical Writer at VMware Bonnie Kern (Yes, my wife!), will be joining us this month for an informal roundtable discussion on how to write blogs and market your business easily.
How does it work?
Bernie will have nine seats open in his “fishbowl” (i.e., Session). There’s only one rule – one seat must always stay open. This is so anyone attending may join the discussion when they feel they have something to contribute or get. Everyone will also be able to network and chat.

A fishbowl conversation is a form of dialog that can be used when discussing topics within large groups. The advantage of the fishbowl is that it allows the entire group to participate in a conversation. Any member of the audience can, at any time, occupy the empty chair and join the session. When this happens, an existing fishbowl member must voluntarily leave the fishbowl and free a chair. The discussion continues with participants frequently entering and leaving the fishbowl.

We’re shifting the dates and shuffling the format!
The Design & Build 2021 Winter Conference has new dates – March 17, 18, & 19.

“Show Your Value Through Certifications” is still the theme of our keynote presentations, with other design & construction related topics being added to the schedule.

Educational events are scheduled from 12:30 to 5:30 pm EST, with networking (and party) sessions spilling over into the evening. Including a virtual St. Patrick’s Day happy hour.

The Greer & Lowdermilk Conference Center in Houston, Texas, is still closed due to COVID-19.

Keep an eye on your inbox and visit AIBD.org/winter-conference often to view the new schedule, receive updates, and registration links, as things develop.

2021 NC-SC AIBD Design Conference and Trade Show Postponed
The decision has been made to postpone the 2021 NC-SC AIBD Design Conference and Trade Show until March 4th & 5th, 2022.

We hope you will mark your calendars ahead and plan to attend.

Of course, this is contingent on getting the virus under control, or better — eradicating it — so we can get back to normal.

As time passes in 2021 and we see how things are going, we will notify you about plans for the 2022 conference and trade show.

Training and Education
AIBD Members get 60% off on-demand education!
We’ve increased the discount available to AIBD members when registering for on-demand online education at AIBD.org/continuing-education. The normal price for a one-hour course is $50, and rather than AIBD members paying $35, that figure has been reduced to $21. That’s a $29 savings on each course.

We said 60% off; it’s actually 58%, we rounded up.

One course per month (with a month or two off) means you’ve paid for your annual membership and more.

There are three ways to get ahold of the discount code.

  1. Refer to the welcome email received upon joining AIBD.
  2. Go to AIBD.org/member-center, log in and click the “Discount Codes” tab.
  3. Contact us at 202-750-4900 or info@AIBD.org.
Advertising for Bids
While you are preparing to establish yourself in the field of total design, you might consider whether there are services you could perform for your clients in your own right after the design stage, without the need for additional members of your team.

Some of you are currently involved in the process of bid-letting and construction inspection, but many building designers are not.

This blog post will deal with a few possible areas for building designer service after the drawings are complete.
