US Navy COOL includes the CPBD designation [MondayMINUTE]

January 25, 2021 edition of the AIBD’s MondayMINUTE weekly newsletter.
Announcements
Navy COOL includes the CPBD designation.
The United States Navy’s Credentialing Opportunities On-Line (COOL) now includes the AIBD’s Certified Professional Building Design (CPBD) program.

Engineering Aids (EA) get Navy Bucks. This means a credential voucher or reimbursement for the CPBD exam, re-certification, or the maintenance fee has been approved for payment through the Navy’s Credential Program Office.

EAs plan, supervise, and perform tasks required in construction surveying, drafting, materials testing, and construction management.

Navy COOL is a centralized, Web-based hub that consolidates information from numerous sources at the federal, state, and local levels on certifications, licenses, apprenticeships, and growth opportunities that correspond with each Navy rating and Officer Designator, collateral duties, and leadership roles.

Educational events are scheduled from 12:30 to 5:30 pm EST, with networking (and party) sessions spilling over into the evening. Including a virtual St. Patrick’s Day happy hour.

Sign up for the next Coffee With Bernie
A monthly “fishbowl” open space discussion hosted by AIBD President, Bernie Kern, on the second Friday.
This month’s quest and opening topic
We haven’t received that info from Bernie yet. Visit back or keep an eye on the AIBD MondayMINUTE e-newsletter.

How does it work?
Bernie will have nine seats open in his “fishbowl” (i.e. Session). There’s only one rule – one seat must always stay open. This is so anyone attending may join the discussion when they feel they have something to contribute or get. Everyone will also be able to network and chat.

A fishbowl conversation is a form of dialog that can be used when discussing topics within large groups. The advantage of the fishbowl is that it allows the entire group to participate in a conversation. Any member of the audience can, at any time, occupy the empty chair and join the session. When this happens, an existing member of the fishbowl must voluntarily leave the fishbowl and free a chair. The discussion continues with participants frequently entering and leaving the fishbowl.

This month’s special presentation is “Portal Frames Built Right,” A pre-recorded presentation by the APA Engineered Wood Association. Friday, Jan 29, 1:15 PM to Jan 29, 3:00 PM EST

Hang out and network with other high achievers and like-minded professionals specializing in residential design or construction.

Our presenter is Robert Pettett, owner of HomeLink Computer Services.  Since 2001 we have been offering affordable web development for residential builders, designers, and remodelers.  We have served clients in over 20 states in the USA, including AIBD.org, since 2006.

Robert’s presentation will include the basics for someone looking to start a website and then move into some of the particulars of good maintenance practices for those who have websites.  These practices will include Content Updates, ‘Call to Action,’ Search Engine Optimization, and Security.  He will also be touching on Social Media (specifically LinkedIn, Facebook, and Houzz) and how to use these platforms to target specific local peoples in your cities with your marketing message.  Of course, all of these efforts are made to get you more exposure and, ultimately, more business.

“I have appreciated the residential building industry for most of my life.” Robert shares. “My father was a residential builder and developer, and my mother was a top real estate agent for many years. In my younger years, I worked professionally in construction in the areas of framing, trim work, deck building, waterproofing, and landscaping.”  It’s not surprising that Robert started a family-based web development company with a large focus of our work has been among home builders/developers and home designers.

Although AIBD chapters are regional in nature, this online platform makes it easy for anyone to attend from anywhere.

2021 NC-SC AIBD Design Conference and Trade Show Postponed
The decision has been made to postpone the 2021 NC-SC AIBD Design Conference and Trade Show until March 4th & 5th, 2022.

We hope you will mark your calendars ahead and plan to attend.

Of course, this is contingent on getting the virus under control, or better — eradicating it — so we can get back to normal.

As time passes in 2021 and we see how things are going, we will notify you about plans for the 2022 conference and trade show.

Advertising for Bids
While you are preparing to establish yourself in the field of total design, you might consider whether there are services you could perform for your clients in your own right after the design stage, without the need for additional members of your team.

Some of you are currently involved in the process of bid-letting and construction inspection, but many building designers are not.

This blog post will deal with a few possible areas for building designer service after the drawings are complete.
